Vintage Sony PS-F9 Vertical Record Player Looks & Works Superbly Flamingo
DESCRIPTION – WHAT IS THIS? Probably one of my most prized vintage audio pieces is now being listed for sale. This is my Sony PS-F9 Flamingo Record Player. This was one of the very first vertical record players to be introduced and one that is still sought after today for not only it’s rarity, but also because of the build-quality, sonic capability, and over-all’cool-factor’ this player evokes when people see it or use it. Over the past 5-8 years, vinyl has made a come-back in a big way, and moreso we see manufacturers now putting out record players to cater to the new comer, old-time audiophiles, or those want something a bit more eccentric. You see new manufacturers like Gramovox with their floating record player use the vertical aesthetic to stand out among other record player manufacturers. However, let’s not forget Sony thought of this concept way back in 1983 with the PS-F9, and this player trumps others as its actually portable. I bought this player many years ago importing it from Japan and have used it lightly over that time. It plays records in vertical and horizontal position nicely. I’ve played my regular 33 and 45 rpm records without any issues. The pictures above show it playing them fine. The automatic clamp works great and all lights work. I’ve taken this out in my padded back-pack with me when I would shop for used vinyl. It’s one of the coolest portables in the world and great for checking out a record if the record shop doesn’t have a sampling station, or if the sampling station is in use by another person. I get a lot of ” ooohs & aaahs ” from folks asking what it was and shocked to see that it could actually play records, and on 2 x AA batteries to boot. The Sony sticker has become a little loose around the edges since the last time I took pictures of it, but it still works great. I don’t have the original Sony power adapter, but I do have a suitable replacement with the correct voltage and polarity that this requires. The original box is included as well, but misplaced the manual years ago. I hate to let this go, but there have been some unforeseen expenses that I quickly need to cover. This is coming from my personal collection and hope someone would use and cherish it as much as I have over the years. These don’t come for sale often at all, let alone in this condition and fully working. That, in combination with the popularity of Vintage Sony portables makes this a truly nice treasure for the music lover, Sony collector, or eccentric aficionado alike.
