THE BEST Hi-MD RECORDER SONY EVER MADE–IN IT’S ORIGINAL BOX WITH ALL THE ACCESSORIES (most never removed from their packaging). This is the best minidisc recorder I ever owned. That’s why I bought two of them. One, I used quite frequently. This one sat on a shelf. I liked this recorder so much, I didn’t want to risk not having one should the first one stopped working. Well, a few years back, the first one’s screen started to go dim. So I reluctantly pulled this one out of its box and used it infrequently. However, I never took any of the accessories out of the box (as you can see in the pictures). An added note: There’s been some questions asked to me about the OLED screen on this unit. Questions like, Is it as bright as it’s always been? When did the first one start to fade? How long had you used it? I could only estimate, but I probably used the other RH-1 for about nine years before the screen began to get too dim for me. Because of that protective film, it’s kind of like the OLED presently has a set of blue blocker sun glasses on it! Sure, I could take the plastic off and take new images of it–but then, whoever buys it wouldn’t get the fun of taking the plastic off of it. Anyway, I stopped using my Hi-MD recorder after a handful of uses and it’s just been sitting on the shelf. So maybe it’s time to go to a new home. Feel free to watch the video. The video is next to the photos. It is the image with “play” arrow over the top of it. About me: I’m an audio and video gear guy who keeps trying new things… And moving on to the next one. Placing the mat on any decks platter is quit amazing; flick the circumference of the platter without the SDS mat and it tings (especially if its metal, or glass rather than acrylic) but then add the SDS mat and repeat the exercise and its far more akin to a dull thunk. This shows how the mat takes so much mechanical energy out of the platter, deadening it down more effectively than any rubber, felt, glass, cork or sorbothane mat Ive ever tried. If the finger test proves its mechanical efficacy, then you should hear the difference it makes when records are spun in anger. Theres a dramatic reduction in clang in the midband, causing a real drop in nasal colouration. The whole soundstage opens out (front to back, left to right), the tonality of the instruments is better discernible, the bass appears tighter and more fluid and the treble smoother and cleaner. Even with a turntable with excellent disc support such as a Michell GyroDec, the SDS mat makes an obvious difference. Taking it a good way towards Orbe performance but with a mazak classic Japanese Direct Drive, its night and day; the SDS mat making the deck sound obviously less bright yet faster and more incisive too. It may not work with every deck equally and may require some experimentation (rubber mat on or off, arm VTA up or same etc,), but Ive tried it on a wide variety of decks (budget, high end, belt drive and direct) and every time Ive wanted to keep it on rather than reverting back to stock.
