Original John Vassos design phonograph in need of restoration. In general the unit appears complete including record holder/dividers. Appears to be with all original parts with minor scratches due to age from 1937. Missing the handle on the outside. Please see all photos because they are part of the description.

1936 John Vassos RCA Victor “The Special” Phonograph Model L. Original green linen case with polished aluminum. It looks to be close to complete, the needle and set screw is missing. I included a video of the turntable running. I don’t know much about vintage audio, I haven’t done anything to the piece or had it looked at by tech. Plays 78 rpm shellac records, wind up motor for turntable, battery operated 4 tube amplifier. There is minor wear to the case and turntable area. The inside battery has some oxidation and there is dust residue. I haven’t tried to clean it, I figured the new owner would like that… Message me If you would like additional photo’s of certain areas. Local pick-up is always welcomed. All packages will be insured. THE METAL PLATE THAT SITS OVER THE DECK. HAS LOST ITS SUPPORT, I BELIEVE THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN HELD UP. BY THE RECORD HOLDER POUCH, BUT THIS IS MISSING. THERE’S NO BATTERY. IT MEASURES 17″ X 15″ X 9. AS FEATURED IN MUSEUMS WORLDWIDE. Cooper Hewitt Museum: Brooklyn Museum, V&A London and others. Vassos, John, born 1898 – died 1989 (designer). Vassoss portable tabletop record player was light years away from the large cabinets commonly built to hold phonographs in the early 1900s. See the Slow/Fast dial for 33 and 45 rpm (revolutions per minute) records, and compartments for new (right) and used (left) needles. The new industrial material of aluminum made a smooth, lightweight, and stylish body. While working for RCA, Vassos also designed cases for the first television sets, which debuted in 1939. In 1933 designer John Vassos met a visiting RCA executive while he was working for WCAU, a flagship CBS radio station in Philadelphia. Vassos was hired to work on RCAs radio lines but his contributions quickly expanded and he executed graphic design assignments including a new corporate logo and sales displays, transmitter architecture, and produced a range of other consumer products such as this phonograph, one of his most well-known designs. In addition to radios, phonographs were new electronic appliances that facilitated entertainment in the 1930s. This phonographs novelty derived from its potential for portability, allowing music to travel where electrical cords could not reach. THE ORIGINAL CARTRIDGE IS MARKED. CRYSTAL UNIT BRUSH DEVELOPMENT COMPANY. Shure licensed Brush patents in order to make crystal microphones and phono cartridges. Brush Development Company Originally founded in 1919 by Charles Francis Brush Jr. Brush Labs was a research company based in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. It was started with the intention to develop phonograph products that utilized piezoelectric crystals. Brush died prematurely in 1927 but some of his work bore fruit, and his backers founded the Brush Development Company in 1930 to commercialize the inventions of Brush Labs. Due to their status in that market segment, Brush was chosen by the US Army to work on recording technologies during World War II. While the company continued to work on magnetic recording technologies. They also worked with Telefunken in the 40’s. Please check out my other items.
