RARE BBC ANTIQUE GARRARD DOUBLE DECK GRAMOPHONE RECORD PLAYER BAKELITE 30-40s
I’ve never seen a double deck this old! RARE ANTIQUE GARRARD DOUBLE DECK GRAMOPHONE RECORD PLAYERS in a Hand made PLYWOOD. EDIT (9-8-18): I HAVE JUST RECIEVED THE INFO BELOW & HAVE EDITED TITLE re: EX- BBC. As an ex BBC employee, I just wanted to let you know some details about this item, which I recognise. This is almost certainly an EX BBC radio Grams deck. Probably from the studios in Broadcasting house or Bush House in london. The slots in the back would have house pre-amps and the hole in the front would have housed the famous fader start mechanism – in which a rotary fader could be used to start a pre-cued deck as it was faded up on air. I’ve also done some further research and whilst my identification as to what they are is correct, it seems that they may have been made earlier than I thought. So your original dating may actually be correct – there was a system which used duplex decks playing 17 78 RPM records – for replay of pre-recorded talks. The little device you found in the bottom of the cabinet may well be a running time measurement system, as the disks would have a few minutes of overlap at each end. BAKELITE panel covered at the back of the turn tables with controllers with a printed paper label bar. Knobs are missing , but stalks can be turned. This bar says “Mic Gain 1 , Mic Gain 2 , Mic Fade 1 , Mic Fade 2 , Gram Fade , Gram L Gain , Gran R Gain , Gram L Base, Gram L Treble , Gream R Bass , Gram R Treble”. Estimated to be from the 1930-40s. The cables and sockets on the floor at the side were in the bottom of the cabinet. Decks have Garrard 7A Induction Motors shown in pics (made in England). Turntables & arms move ok, 4 HMV stylus / needles included in packet (see on turntable in pic). These are old style styluses, so I assume will only play the old records, not modern ones. Cabinet has no rot, but has paint wear & scratches / marks. It is solid except for top panel at back need re-gluing at side. It has 2 rubber bumpers on back at bottom. Perhaps where it rested against a wall / panel. Knobs & dials missing , but stalks can still be turned. The inside is dusty in pics. Chain holding lid is broken on right hand side , but left one holds it. Cables at back have been cut , some are dangling down with connectors , possibly for valves or light bulbs. Some of the workings are installed in 2 vintage tobacco tins attached to the underside. In the last pic is a plastic tool which was in the bottom , the use of which is unknown.
