Vintage turntable Pioneer PL-550 DD Quartz Lock record player. Restored
I recently bought three players from a family of an audiophile. This was one of them. All three were in the same house since new. This Pioneer and Yamaha YP-D71 are perfect. If you are not familiar with this player, it is a Quartz Lock, but you can turn off the Lock and use a pitch control. This player has a VTA adjustment, big motor and heavy platter. I stripped the fake wood vinyl and replaced with this gorgeous real wood bloodwood veneer. Combination of seven layers of finish was applied. It looks better in person. Silky smooth with satin finish. Note neat tight sharp corners. Search and see if this is not the best looking PL-550. I don’t use any equipment. Everything is done by hands. Completely taken apart, cleaned in and out, including tonearm parts and every knob. The control panel has a small mark by the ON knob. Cueing rod was cleaned and new damping fluid applied. It drops tonearm slow and softly. Platter was wet sanded and polished. Dust cover was cleaned, buffed and polished and it is one of the best 40 year old lids I’ve seen. Some light marks here and there, but it is nice and clear as you see on the pictures. Speed pot was cleaned with Deoxit. Both speeds are stable, and motor is dead silent. Original Pioneer head shell is fitted with ADC SLM63 cartridge and stylus. Sounds as good as it looks. Ready for the another 40 year run.
