If you’re an uncompromising collector of antique technology, make sure to check out all my listings after you look at this one. I don’t think you’ll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere — hundreds of listings each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping “gee whiz” gadgetry in exceptional original condition. Here’s a beautiful 1903 Edison banner front Standard cylinder phonograph with an original 14 brass and black horn. The phonograph has desirable “combination” gearing and, with the appropriate reproducer, can play all types of cylinders — 2 minute, 4 minute, brown wax, black wax, black celluloid, Blue Amberol, Indestructible, etc. The phonograph is in excellent working order, and it needs nothing to be enjoyed immediately. Japanned finish on the phonograph’s bedplate is still deep black and glossy, and the gold decorations are still prominent. The phonograph comes with its original shaver and an original Edison 4-minute “H” reproducer. The motor is in excellent condition, with ample torque. The governor assembly is working properly, and the pitch doesn’t waver as a cylinder plays through. All of the gearing beneath the bedplate is clean, and the phonograph plays cylinders with ease. The desirable banner-style cabinet decal is crisp and original. The “green oak” cabinet finish is likewise original. The wood has been beautifully preserved, and the finish is clean. The horn is original, and its condition is excellent. I’ll include with the phonograph an Edison Blue Amberol cylinder and an original oil can. Overall, a super nice cylinder phonograph that’s ready to go and requires no restoration or servicing. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your “bargain” arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you’ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
