Vintage Compax JH Silcron Audiophile Record Player with Lustre Tonearm-Working
This beautiful Compax III by Encel Electronics (Sydney) belies its vintage looks because it is a true HiFi turntable, high end in its day. Later on marketed under the Silcron and JH brands. Extracting the music from your records is a desirable Lustre tonearm, complete with Lustre silicon-damped armlift, tonearm rest and equiped with a brand new Danish made Ortofon OM10 cartridge. The timber plinth and lid is in really good condition as you can see from the photos. The plexiglas insert dustcover has minor scuffing from placing records on top, but as you can see, it looks very good. With a bit of elbow grease it will polish up like new if you’re bothered. The hinges are in excellent condition and support the lid in the open position when playing records. It plays 2 speeds, 33.33 and 45RPM records. Speed was checked with a strobe and was found to be spot on. Lustre tonearm in excellent condition. The headshell is fully adjustable for proper cartridge alignment. The headshell wires are in excellent, almost new condition. It has the standard 1/2 size cartridge mount which makes available a wide variety of both modern and vintage cartridges. Desirable knife edge platter bearing, in perfect condition. Power cord and and RCA connectors are in excellent condition. It is earthed via the RHS -‘ve pin. It has been tested with numerous integrated amplifiers, and there was no annoying hum produced from any of them. The belt is the 1mm, round type (like a big O ring) and is in good condition. Belt replacements are available online or you can make your own very cheaply from 1mm O-ring material available online. Being a true hifi table, it is completely manual in operation. There are no “auto-start” and “end-stop” mechanicals to mess with the smooth operation of the tonearm. To change speeds requires that you stop the turntable from spinning by turning it off and then twisting the speed change knob. It has been serviced and then tested with an Ortofon OM-10 cartridge and stylus and it sounds fantastic. So, if you like the vintage look, but you also want proper hifi sound from your records, this is the one for you! Don’t have an amp? I have a range of fully serviced and 100% working, vintage integrated amplifiers that suit this machine. No, I will not separate the Lustre tonearm from the turntable, so don’t ask! Overseas buyers, note this turntable runs on 240V, so won’t suit USA or Japan.
